Smart roofs
Warehouses, production halls, large format stores, sports and events facilities – the majority of them have flat roofs with an area equal to that of a few or even several dozen football pitches. Since recently, their administrators have been helped in overseeing their condition by the Smart Roof platform created by Sense Monitoring.
What were the company’s beginnings? ‘Together with Przemysław Gałązka we were qualified for the first KTP ScaleUp acceleration programme run by the Krakow Technology Park. We had an already tested prototype of a Smart Roof, what we lacked was mass production and implementation. Thanks to the programme, we made a quantum leap in three months – from a prototype to commercial production,’ said Artiom Komardin, MSc in Civil Engineering and co-founder of Sense Monitoring.
Threats to flat roofs include lingering snow, water accumulation, leaks resulting in soaking of mineral wool in the insulation layer and ageing of structural elements. The condition of the roof directly determines the safety of the users of the facility. The company itself installs and controls the system, which consists of a network of sensors and a web application. Building administrators do not need to monitor their roofs all the time. Having opened the application, they are immediately informed about what is going on with the roofs, and they receive text messages if any risks arise.

More and more roofs The warehouse market in Poland is growing dynamically. During the first two quarters of 2019, over 1.1 million square metres were commissioned, the highest result recorded in the first half-year in the history of the market. The total warehouse stock in Poland have reached the level of as much as 16.9 million m².
The system has already been installed in several Poczta Polska (Polish Postal Service) facilities. ‘We know what is going on with the roof straight away. We receive text messages when there is any risk as a result of the steel structure getting bent,’ said Jarosław Frydrychowicz from the Poczta Polska Shipping and Sorting Hub in Lisi Ogon near Bydgoszcz, where the system is used. The Sense customers also include well-known brands from the light industry and logistics sectors.
