World-class standards
The doctors from the Oncology Centre in Gliwice treat the types of neoplasms which have so far been regarded as incurable. This is possible thanks to an innovative therapy using interventional radiology. This instils optimism, especially when the sad statistics are taken into account. Nearly 100 thousand people annually die of this disease in Poland alone, of which around 94 thousand are the victims of cancers*.
Thanks to EU funds the Oncology Centre has been expanded. ‘It was a must. The Oncology Centre – Maria Skłodowska-Curie Institute Branch in Gliwice – is the largest oncology centre in southern Poland. We have patients from all over Poland, and also from the neighbouring countries,’ explained Prof. Krzysztof Składowski, M.D., Ph. D., the Director of the Centre. Since the end of 2016, patients have been seen at the new four-storey Diagnostic and Therapeutic Unit. By the end of 2018, the building was provided with additional specialist medical equipment, and, today, it is not only among the largest, but also the most innovative centres in Poland.
‘We offer the most advanced equipment for interventional radiology of lung, liver, head and neck tumours and metastases. In many cases these solutions are unique in Poland. It is thanks to this investment that we are able to perform these interventional radiology procedures. We are still indefatigable in our efforts to provide additional equipment for our employees. We want to provide them with the best working conditions possible. The better equipped the centre, the better for the patients,’ explained Prof. Składowski.
More research The new equipment was assumed to enable examining 50 thousand people per year. Currently, 123 thousand examinations and consultations annually are performed at the Oncology Centre in Gliwice.
